Almost 7 in 10 employees in APAC expect more investment in culture development

A new work culture is needed to address the needs of millennials who are increasingly entering the workplace, according to Microsoft’s study.

Employees in Asia Pacific (APAC) region expect their organisations to invest more in culture development (67 percent) and projects that would help close digital skills gap (68 percent) in the workplace.

This was among the findings of the Microsoft Asia Workplace 2020 Study, which is based on a survey of 4,175 employees in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The growth in the use of digital technologies, as well as the increase in number of millennials entering the workplace require organisations to foster a new work culture, according to the study.

"The rise of digital technologies, along with a new generation of millennials entering the workforce, has brought about a need to address changing workers' expectations, knowledge and skills, as well as the tools they use," said Byron Rader, general manager, Applications & Services Group of Microsoft Asia Pacific.

"With more than half of the world's millennials residing in Asia, the workplace will need to transform to adapt to the technology habits of these digital natives," he continued.

The study highlighted the following factors that influence the work culture in APAC today:

1.        Mobile workforce and new security risks

While 72 percent of respondents use employer-issued computers, 75 percent admitted that they also use their personal smartphones for work. Another 63 percent said they also use company-owned devices to check personal e-mails.

Microsoft thus warned businesses on the new security risks that this may cause to the organisation. To combat this, businesses are advised to strengthen their devices' security to avoid getting their confidential data at risk.

2.       Need for collaboration tools

More than a third of the polled workers (36 percent) said they work with more than 10 teams at any one point in time. Microsoft said this only indicates the need for collaboration tools to help the workers get their tasks done.

In fact, 41 percent of the respondents believed that collaboration tools are important in their work, especially to respond to internal and external requests in a timely manner. 

"People are at the heart of digital transformation. Their expectations, knowledge and skills, as well as the tools they use for work, are determining factors in the level of transformation that any organisation can achieve," said Rader.
