Mainframes are sound investments when done right.

7) What future does the mainframe have in IT environments?

I think we are going to see convergence between the mainframe and the cloud. However, that is further down the road. What we are seeing in the immediate future is the thinning of walls between various platforms that will enable systems to work better together. We are already starting to see companies steer away from silo management, and demanding platforms that will work well with others. For instance, it can be a business process or transaction moving from Unix to Windows or other platforms with a database running on a mainframe. To do that, we first have to develop tools that are similar across the board, which is what we are working on and continuing to deliver in line with our Mainframe 2.0 strategy.
