Malaysian regulator Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and US communications giant AT&T are hosting a 'Developers' Day' in Kuala Lumpur on 7-8 September 2013. This event is for all developers and non-developers with cash prizes totalling RM44,000 (US$13,270) to further invest in their ideas.
AT&T senior executive vice president, technology and network operations, John Donovan said participants will have 24 hours to form teams and turn their small-business idea into a mobile app during the first such event held in Asia Pacific by the two host organisations.
Donovan said the initiative was to encourage more innovation and entrepreneurship against a backdrop of resources, education and networking structure needed to produce quality apps during the event.
He said participants will have access to AT&T's Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) - already built-out code that accesses the power of AT&T's network - which they can quickly plug into their apps for added functionality, such as speech-to-text and voice recognition. AT&T's experts will also be on hand to lend assistance where needed.
"We are committed to engaging with developers worldwide to deliver a new generation of innovative, powerful apps that leverage the deep capabilities of the AT&T network," said Donovan. "This event complements our ongoing efforts to provide developers with the right tools and opportunities to capitalise on mobile technology's transformative power, helping us enhance the communities we touch and better the world in which we live."
"Through this event, we will be able to witness the hidden talents and creativity of each participant. More importantly, it also showcases the ability of our local app designers to compete with the best in the world. Indeed, this augurs well for the future of the app industry in Malaysia," said MCMC chief planning and development officer, Dato' Mohd Ali Hanafiah, who added that the platform would support creative Malaysian app designers.
The AT&T/MCMC Developers' Day will take place in The Westin Kuala Lumpur on 7-8 September 2013. In addition to a grand prize of US$10,000, winners may also present their apps via telepresence to delegates attending September's APECTel in Hawaii as well as at the Malaysia Global Entrepreneurship Summit to be held in Kuala Lumpur on 11-12 October 2013. [Participants can register online at: mobileappkul.eventbrite.com]. The deadline for registration is 3 September 2013.
