How companies can thrive in the TPPA era: SAP

Enterprise solutions provider SAP Malaysia has adopted a positive take on the concerns raised by some companies to the forthcoming Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA).

SAP Malaysia's managing director Terrence Yong said that when it comes into force, the TPPA) will result in the creation of a freer trade region in the Asia-Pacific region.

For Malaysian companies, this would then result in even more opportunities for innovation and growth, although it is also certain that businesses will be met with an influx of fierce new competition, said Yong, who was speaking to Computerworld Malaysia recently after witnessing a partnership agreement between NEC Corporation of Malaysia and Global Facilities Management (GFM).

"The TPPA will liberalise trade and investment among 12 Pacific-rim countries and, as a result, business opportunities would increase - and so, too would threats in this new era of greater regional economic integration," he said.

Yong said that to stay agile and competitive, businesses need to be able to manage and communicate with teams across borders, have visibility into business operations across geographies, and quickly extract insights from unprecedented amounts of data.

"Adopting cloud-based technologies provides businesses with opportunities to drastically improve the way they operate in the new economy. By leveraging the cloud businesses can: gain access to the most current and innovative applications and software; streamline processes providing businesses the agility needed to run simply across geographies; develop and run custom applications to suit unique growing business needs; and, improve channels for collaboration with customers, partners and suppliers," he said.

Cloud and partner ecosystem

"In addition to adopting the right technology to capitalise on the opportunities in the new digital economy, businesses must also possess a sound understanding of the local and regional markets they aim to expand in," Yong said.

He also said that local partners with local knowledge are critical for companies who want to leverage overseas opportunities.

"A strong partner ecosystem provides businesses with competitive insights into the business environment they aspire to operate in, from customer behaviour and needs, to regulations and best practices," Yong said. "By mobilising partners across borders, companies can bring in more revenue and gain an edge over their competitors.'

"With the global economy becoming borderless and increasingly hyper connected, economic models are being reshaped requiring businesses to work with partners hand-in-hand to better compete. By harnessing the power of a strong partner ecosystem, businesses will be better equipped with an essential, robust understanding of local markets they choose to expand in, with their systems compliant with local and international regulations, positioning them on a stronger footing for success in the new digital economy," he said.

Insights to act 'in the moment'

Commenting on the NEC and GFM partnership agreement, Yong said that NEC would be implementing the SAP S/4HANA Enterprise Management System for GFM.

He said GFM is a Malaysian-incorporated company that strongly focused on offering asset owners an integrated solution in the management of all facilities services. The company provided management services typically to building occupiers / owners to support their business needs, allowing them to focus on their core business.

SAP S/4HANA Enterprise Management, meanwhile, addresses functionality beyond financials, mostly in inventory management and production planning and is a fully integrated system for governance and compliance, said Yong.

To cover the broad scope of requirements set forth by GFM, modules to support Finance, Sales and Marketing, Procurement, Project Systems, Inventory and Human Resource Management were included.

Yong said that the solution will be able to empower GFM's business users with insights to act 'in the moment'.
"It is intelligent - going beyond automation to provide predictive suggestions. And it is integrated - not only among GFM's various departments but also with the external business environment, "said Yong.

"Today's announcement builds on SAP's commitment to enable strong, growing businesses that can seize the amazing opportunities of the digital economy," he added.

The current implementation at GFM is targeted at the headquarter systems overseeing the core business operations. The future will see the integration and replacement of the multi-vendor operations Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) requirements.
