QFabric will flatten data centres: interview

World's first true single layer data-centric fabric, which will take data centres into next decade: Juniper Networks Malaysia.

 

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 MARCH 2011 - Networking solutions provider Juniper Networks Malaysia says that QFabric is the world's first true data centric fabric that will take data centres into the next decade.

 

Juniper Networks Malaysia managing director Wan Ahmad Kamal said that in addition to this global announcement of Juniper QFabric as well as a new 10GB [gigabyte] data centre switch - the QFX3500, which ships this quarter, has also been launched. "This is new concept in data centre networking and is driven by two key market trends - Cloud computing and the mobile Internet."

 

"These two trends have already started to yield benefits in terms of lower IT costs as well as a quantum leap in connectivity speed and the scale of IT," said Wan Ahmad. "Analyst firm Gartner said by 2015, the cloud computing market is estimated to be worth US$2.78 trillion and that mobile devices have surpassed the desktop PC model."

 

"Video is making up a large proportion of network traffic and estimated to comprise more than 32 per cent of 170,000 Petabytes per month global traffic by 2021, according to opinions from research firm MINTS, as well as Juniper and Cisco," he said.

 

"The demand created by the explosive growth of cloud services and mobile Internet requires an exponential data centre model," he said. "The data centre has evolved significantly in the last two years from on-premise, dedicated servers and storage to software services, elastic compute and shared storage."

 

 Simplifying network complexities: 3-2-1

 

"However, the network layer remains a stumbling block driven in part by adding boxes, which is a legacy response to increased demand," said Wan Ahmad. "This increases the complexity of networking environments."

 

"The traditional three layer network architecture in a data centre, called the spanning tree protocol (STP), results in an inefficient 50 per cent latency legacy utilisation issue. This is now being replaced by a single layer fabric technology by Juniper," he said. "Costs, inefficiencies and risks in STP are better handled by the single layer fabric standard."

"Reduced latency results in more speed and therefore greater productivity," he said. "For example, lower latency plays a very important role in the New York Stock Exchange systems."

 

"Juniper's approach from day one has always been to simplify the complex nature of networking," said Wan Ahmad. "To make things simpler in a complex environment requires innovation."

 

"Juniper Technology announced its 3-2-1 network layer architecture evolution  in May 2010," he said. "For instance, Hong Leong Bank adopted the two-layer deployment, while New York Stock Exchange's 10 data centres were consolidated into four. The Tokyo and London stock exchanges are also on the 3-2-1 evolutionary path."
