Malaysian tourism site targets more than US$17 million by end of the year

KUALA LUMPUR, 13 MAY 2009 Malaysian ministry of tourism website Virtual Malaysia.Com has set an end-of-year target of US$17.4 million (RM60 million) in online booking revenues with the official launch of its Malaysian Tourism Online Unified Reservation System (myTOURS).

VirtualMalaysia.Com chief executive officer Rohizam Md Yusoff said myTOURS, which is an online platform, included components launched earlier this year such as Flights2Go, and other travel-related technology integral to the entire supply chain of the tourism industry.

The idea of myTOURS came up at a time when there was lack of integration at government and agencies levels, said Yusoff. The supply chain at the industry level was fragmented and at the same time, the demand for online travel from consumers was huge, and growing.

Currently, Virtual Malaysia.Com has signed up more than 500 travel partners and these partners currently offer more than 1500 travel packages on the myTOURS platform, he said. Some users of the myTOURS platform include the Web portals of Sarawak Tourism, Perak Tourism, Johor Tourism, OIC Tourism and the Commonwealth Tourism Centre.

Yusoff said: myTOURS was developed to benefit both travellers and travel service providers, and was a concentrated effort to promote the tourism industry in order to create maximum visibility for Malaysia in the globe.
