CIOs need to deal with not just technology, but also how to cultivate their staff.

When there is a failure to invest in talent management or managing the different generations, providing for the different needs and expectations, companies will lose out on key talent.

What are the key traits of a CIO who also needs to be a successful leader?

As a leader, CIOs shape their organisation's brand and capability. The company's brand is intrinsically linked to the role technology plays and this is important in attracting and retaining talent for Gen Y.

Also, CIOs need to look at the capabilities of the business in technology investment and access to technology, the ability to attract and retain the next generation workforce and also to build deeper people management skills with coaching-based leadership.
