Five tips for migrating to the public cloud

LogicMonitor's Steven Kahn reveals five tricks to make migrating to the public cloud easier

More and more businesses are moving critical applications out of their data centres and into the public cloud, so easing the way to full or part public cloud migration is high on the priority list for most enterprise IT departments.

Speaking at Cloud and Devops World 2016 in London yesterday, Steven Kahn, regional manager for performance performance monitoring firm, LogicMonitor, highlighted five steps to help businesses migrate to the public cloud.

1. Cloud migration tips: Try out different cloud providers

Cloud migration tips: Try out different cloud providers

Depending on what public cloud service you choose, performing a measured trial is one way of making sure both the public cloud and the chosen vendor is a good fit for your business.

Kahn said: "AWS is different from your traditional infrastructure and the same goes for Microsoft Azure and other cloud providers, so you can't just do a straight line to line comparison between the services you'll be using.

"So you definitely need to practice to see what will work and what the best mix of resources will be."

2. Cloud migration tips: Create meaningful dashboards

Cloud migration tips: Create meaningful dashboards

Enterprises should create dashboards ensuring all IT staff, including your development team have access. Steven Kahn said:

"Everyone along the software delivery lifecycle, including the dev team, should see what's going on and have visibility of the provisioning of new infrastructure, the deployment of new code, the dev and QA cycles and what's happening in those cycles.

He added that systems visibility "democratises the performance data", whether in a dev or test environment or infrastructure in production.

"So when we talk about creating meaningful dashboards, often dev teams will not dig into a systems-level tool because it's not telling them what it needs to tell them. So you'll see tools that get owned by systems admins and operations teams that never get logged into by dev teams because it doesn't have the kind of feel the dev team wants it to."

3. Cloud migration tips: Practice makes perfect

Kahn highlighted that businesses should run tests in similar environments to prepare for their migration, he said:

"[Businesses should] run realistic load tests and graph the results. One of the things you can't ever prepare for is how something is going to scale, and what the resource requirements will be but you can do some forecasting and get as much information as possible in order to look at what that future impact will be."

4. Cloud migration tips: Monitor all environments

Kahn summerised the importance of closely monitoring all virtual environments to limit the possibility of future problems occurring. He said:
