Why Oracle picked Malaysia as its Asia Pacific ‘Digital Hub’

How Oracle's hub will work

The new Kuala Lumpur (KL) facility intends to connect SMEs to the 'new cloud economy' using solutions to enhance operations and growth, said Fitri.

A newly formed digital team will concentrate on assisting midsize organisations to adapt to the cloud rapidly, he said.  This KL team will also support the company's Asia Pacific digital sales and support functions across 21 countries and also Malaysia.

There will be a 'startup culture' at the hub and the team will use the latest collaboration tools, techniques and technologies, Fitri added.

Customers will be able to take advantage of the hub's suite of cloud applications, platform, and infrastructure services as both standalone services and as bundles.

François Lançon, senior vice president, Oracle Japan and Asia Pacific, commented: "The cloud is democratising IT; you just need a web browser or a mobile phone app to take advantage of it. What's more, it has incredible transformation potential for small businesses, enabling them to do things they have never been able to do before, at an affordable price, such as use technology to streamline business processes, gain access to an easy-to-use platform for innovation, and digitise their customer experience."

InvestKL's chief executive officer Datuk Zainal Amanshah expresses delight and added, "It is very much in line with our Government's focus on the digital economy.  Its arrival will help generate a positive impact on the local eco-system in terms of talent identification and development, benefits to the SMEs and collaboration with our local Universities."

Why hubs are hot

Following his keynote at the Kuala Lumpur edition of the CIO Conference in April this year, (see - The Digital keys to successful Disruption: CIO Conference 2017 in KL Computerworld Malaysia asked MDEC's vice-president (growth development ecosystem) Norhizam Abdul Kadir for an exclusive 'deep dive' interview into the whys and wherefores of Malaysia's new Digital Hub strategy and how disruption forms the X factor behind the grand plan.

The Hub programme has been seen as a master cog (see - MDEC adds another master cog to Malaysia's Digital Economy), an initiative that also has a global aspect as it is open to both local and foreign startups and entrepreneurs.

Hub based initiatives are expected to assist local SMEs to tap the potential of the Asean market. MDEC's vice president for enterprise development Gopi Ganesalingam told Computerworld Malaysia in an April interview that: "The local market is too small for a company to grow big; they have to venture outside.  Visibility is the gain that they most probably appreciate. Oracle's move is another example of industry participating, supporting as well as benefitting from the hub concept. As companies expand into regional and global marketplaces, there is an increasing need for transformation paths and solutions that are easier to deploy and configure, irrespective of location.  

How will Oracle's hub help MDEC's hub strategy? Fitri said, "Oracle's vision in setting up a 'digital hub' is an imperative in advancing the country's digital economy. We believe that the hub ecosystem is key in positioning Malaysia as a key destination for businesses around the world to invest and grow their presence in the country."

"This is very much in line with our decision to develop a digital hub in Malaysia," he said. "We will support our cloud strategy in the Asia Pacific region and better serve the SME market in this new cloud economy.

MDEC's chief strategy officer Ir. Siva Ramanathan put the move into Digital Malaysia's context. "At MDEC, we believe that Malaysia's digital future has the potential to unlock significant economic, environmental, and social value within the nation. We applaud Oracle's efforts in reaching out to our SMEs with access to the latest cloud technologies that are vital to their growth, and help them transform digitally.
