A range of SingTel services were disrupted yesterday due to a fire that broke out in a cable room at its Bukit Panjang Internet exchange building.
About 60,000 fixed broadband lines and 30,000 fixed voice lines operated by SingTel were disrupted. Around 30,000 mio TV customers were unable to access the service too. The areas affected include Woodlands, Bukit Panjang, Choa Chu Kang, Upper Bukit Timah, Mandai, Marsiling and Kranji.
The fire, which broke out around 2pm yesterday, damaged 33 fibre cables and affected 100 mobile base stations. Restoration works began last night and services should be back to normal by 7am tomorrow, according to a SingTel spokesperson.
Aside from SingTel services, services by other telcos and banks were also affected by the incident.
As StarHub leases some of SingTel's optical fibre capacity hosted at the affected building, its customers in the north-west part of Singapore were unable to access its cable TV, cable and fibre broadband, and digital voice services.
OpenNet said in a press statement that its fibre customers in the affected areas may experience service disruption as 81 of its cables were damaged by the fire. The company added that restoration works are in progress to ensure that affected services will be up within the next 24 to 36 hours.
Some ATMs and other banking services by DBS, UOB and OCBC were also reported to be down yesterday due to this incident.
