MSC [Multimedia Supercorridor] Malaysia status public-listed mTouche Technology [mTouche] and Taiwan-listed Arbor Technology [Arbor] have signed a digital infrastructure alliance to help drive the development in Malaysia of Internet of Things [IoT] and Smart City solutions.

Under the terms of the memorandum of understanding [MoU], the signing of which was witnessed by YBhg Dato' Mohamed Sharil Mohamed Tarmizi, chairman of national regulator Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the two technology companies will combine their knowledge and experience to support the development of technologies and innovation that will offer end-to-end solutions in Smart City infrastructure in Malaysia.

The strategic alliance between mTouche and Arbor will involve five core areas, namely Smart City, Smart Advertising, Industrial Personal Computers, Facility Engineering Operations, and Fleet Management system.

As the alliance was also expected to build business opportunities between Malaysia and Taiwan, several representatives of the Taiwanese Government also attended the signing, which was endorsed by the NGO Institute for Information Industry (III) of Taiwan.

Zakhir Mohamed, group chief executive officer of mobile multimessaging and applications firm mTouche, said, "We are very pleased to have Arbor Technology as our strategic partner in Malaysia. The company is a well-established player in the digital industry, developing and offering products that are innovative and reliable."

"Over the past few years, Malaysia has remained aggressive in supporting the growth of the country's digital infrastructure," said Zakhir. "As a leading technology company in Malaysia, mTouche Technology is confident that our alliance with another technology powerhouse will enable the Group to not only tap business opportunities in this high growth area but also develop and introduce solutions that will enrich the lives of Malaysians at large."

 Regional office in Malaysia

Eric Lee, president of embedded computing products and services specialist Arbor, said, "Since Arbor Technology's inception 20 years ago, we have stayed committed to our vision of pushing the innovation envelope in digital technologies in order to bring wealth to the society and improve quality of life."

"We remain bullish on Malaysia, specifically with the Digital Malaysia framework that aims to advance the country towards a developed digital economy by 2020," said Lee.

"Following the opening of Arbor's regional office in Kuala Lumpur a year ago, this strategic alliance is another progressive step for the company in terms of expanding its presence in Malaysia," he said. "By working alongside mTouche a proven technology innovator with in-depth understanding of the Malaysian as well as ASEAN market, we aim to play a significant and leading role in the development of digital infrastructure not only within Malaysia but throughout the region," Mr. Lee concluded.

In addition, Intel Malaysia's intelligent systems group marketing development manager, Thomas Kam Boon See, delivered a presentation on the company's IoT vision. Intel, a technology partner of Arbor, projected that by 2020, there will be more than 200 billion 'smart' devices and will result in US$1.9 trillion in global economic value-add through sales into diverse end markets.
