ORLANDO -- T-Mobile USA is still kicking along as the nation's fourth-largest carrier despite agreeing on Sunday to a $39 billion takeover by AT&T.
In fact, T-Mobile reportedly plans to keep running TV advertisements that attack AT&T.
And Tuesday at the International CTIA show here, T-Mobile showed off a slate of seven new smartphones, tablets and dongles.
Analysts noted that T-Mobile got AT&T to agree to pay $3 billion if the deal falls through; that represents a higher percentage of the sale price than other buyers have offered in other recently completed mergers.
T-Mobile representatives weren't available to discuss the company's reasons for continuing with business as usual, although preparation for the recent product announcements probably began months ago.
It could take as long as a year to secure regulatory approval and finalize the merger. That means T-mobile customers could be using T-mobile devices for quite a while, perhaps long after the deal is complete, some analysts said.
The products unveiled today include the T-Mobile G2X With Google smartphone. Manufactured by LG, the G2X is powered by a 1-GHz processor and features a 4-inch touchscreen. Pricing wasn't announced.
T-Mobile also announced the T-Mobile G-Slate With Google by LG, an Android 3.0-based tablet with an 8.9-inch screen. The device will cost $529.99 after rebate with a two year agreement from T-Mobile.
Three laptop dongles and a mobile hot spot offering were also announced.
T-Mobile also said its previously announced Sidekick 4G will cost $99.99 after rebate and with a two year service agreement.
