Thailand production expected to start in December 2010

BANGKOK, 11 FEBRUARY 2010 - A US-based hard disk drive component manufacturer has chosen Thailand as its first production base outside its home market.

Hutchinson Technology will invest over US$120 million in a new production facility in Ayutthaya province, scheduled for completion in August 2010.

The project is Hutchinson's first overseas investment. The fact that Hutchinson chose Thailand as its overseas production base confirms that foreign investors continue to have strong confidence in Thailand, said Ajarin Pattanapanchai, deputy secretary-general of Thailand's Board of Investment.

The company follows a number of other leading global hard disk drive manufacturers who have already set up production facilities in the country: Seagate Technology, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Hitachi Global Storage. Hutchinson's investment will further boost the hard disk drive manufacturing industry in Thailand.

Hutchinson Technology (Thailand)'s production facility will produce suspension in hard disk drive and supply the parts to leading hard disk drive manufacturers both in Thailand and other countries. It is expected that the plant will begin production two months after the construction is complete.

Hutchinson Technology Inc decided to choose Thailand as its first overseas production base because of the country's capability and potential. Hutchinson will also have close connection to hard disk drive producers whose production base is in Thailand. By having its own parts production facility here, Hutchinson will be able to improve speed of product delivery to its customers, said Kathleen Skarvan, president of the disk drive components division.
