The Philippine Airlines (PAL) has deployed an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) System to enhance passengers' safety, as well as help PAL be compliant and reduce costs.
According to PAL, the highly sensitive nature of flight data meant a paper-based system did not meet its requirements for a high level of security, as these documents could be easily lost or stolen.
The company has thus deployed VMware AirWatch - a platform for enterprise mobility - across 1,300 devices to create the electronic system. The new EFB system allows their flight operations team to distribute updates as they become available, allowing both flight and on-ground members to access the most updated information through their company-issued devices.
The VMWare AirWatch implemented data encryption and enables the airline to detect threats and remotely wipe, lock or quarantine any compromised devices.
"Security and reliability are critical components of our business. Moving to a secure and mobile EFB system has enabled us to fulfill both objectives," said Selino Jalalon, Manager, Flight Technical, Flight Operations Department of PAL.
PAL said the new system also improved their efficiency by reducing operational and manpower costs from recurring printing and binding. It also allowed them to offload an estimated 75 kilograms of paper-based Flight Bag documents from each flight.
In addition, the airline said the EFB system helped them cut down load and consumption of 2,600 reams of paper annually, which results to a more environmentally sustainable operating model.

Apart from boosting efficiency and cost savings while meeting regulatory compliance requirements, Philippine Airlines is now also able to easily scale the EFB system up or down, as and when required," said Emmanuel Portugal, Country Manager of VMware Philippines.
