SINGAPORE, 7 APRIL 2011 - Singapore will be home to the first Asia facility capable of repairing a key component of the forthcoming Boeing B787 Dreamliner.
The announcement was made yesterday, by Lim Hwee Hua, minister in the Singapore prime minister's office, second minister for finance and transport, at the official opening of SAFRAN electronics Asia's new facility in Singapore.
In her address, the minister said that SAFRAN Electronics Asia will be the first Asian facility with repair capability for the Boeing B787 Dreamliner's innovative electric braking actuation controller (EBAC).
The EBAC is set to eventually replace existing pneumatic and hydraulic systems to become the predominant braking system technology of the world's next-generation aircraft.
The SAFRAN Group, which has been in Singapore for more than 20 years, is an international high-technology group with four core businesses: aerospace propulsion, aircraft equipment, defence and security.
New avionics repair capabilities
The minister said: "SAFRAN's decision to establish new and emerging avionics repair capabilities in Singapore is in line with Singapore's strategy of developing broad and deep MRO (maintenance, repair operations) capabilities that will allow us to build upon our existing capabilities and move further up the value chain in order to better serve the global market.
"The development of new skill sets will also pre-position Singapore to embrace the next generation of technologies that are rapidly emerging in aerospace MRO."
Minister Lim told the launch that Singapore's aerospace industry was one of its fastest growing sectors, with a compound annual growth rate of 12 per cent over the past 20 years, and achieving a record output of S$7.2 billion (US$5.71 billion) in 2010. Today, Singapore has a quarter-share of the Asian MRO market, and is the largest MRO hub in Asia.
In her speech, the minister said the global aviation industry was expanding and international air traffic was set to double over the next 15 years, with the Asia-Pacific poised to lead the growth. Just recently, Airbus forecast that Asia-Pacific airlines would be carrying a third of all passenger traffic worldwide and two-thirds of all freight passing through the region.
"I am also happy to note that this new facility remains SAFRAN's only OEM MRO facility outside of France and the US for Sagem, Messier-Bugatti and Technofan avionics equipment, and would like to thank SAFRAN for its continued confidence in Singapore," she said.
