SingAREN unveils the first 100 Gbps community network in Singapore

SingAREN-Lightwave Internet Exchange (SLIX) provides Singapore’s R&E community seamless access to a network with a hundred times more capacity than before, and enjoy bandwidth fully dedicated to their use.

Singapore Advanced Research and Education Network (SingAREN) launched yesterday (August 28, 2014) the first 100 Gbps community network in the Southeast Asia region which will help Singapore's research and education (R&E) community to gain access to a super high-speed network with 100 times the capacity than before.

Dubbed the SingAREN-Lightwave Internet Exchange (SLIX), this new network will provide the research and education sector bandwidth fully dedicated to their use. Built on an optical fibre core comprising dark fibres, SLIX allows resiliency, future capacity upgrades, and technology-proof network connectivity.

Funded by SingAREN and the National Research Foundation (NRF), SLIX is the result of a collaboration with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS).

According to SingAREN, SLIX will serve as a R&E testbed that enables researchers and educators to run services for the R&E community, specifically for Big Data and high-speed applications such as genome and climate data.

Some examples of R&E applications that are supported by SLIX include database mirroring services, bilateral disaster recovery, high-performance computing federation and shared services, and high-volume peering for content data networks.

In addition, SLIX will also enable research organisations to test different protocols for interconnections such as the Infiniband; and optical network researchers to carry out their experiments.
