Lastly, the vast populations and appetite for mobile data within the region means that building massively scalable and highly performing products are vital. Openwaves experience in particular within the Japan market has meant that these elements have been part of our product DNA for many years and will continue to be a focus for us going forward.
Who are your customers in the region?
Openwaves customers in the Asia Pacific and Japan regions include, but are not limited, to, Telstra in Australia, KDDI and Kansai Multimedia Service Company (KMS) and Softbank Mobile in Japan and Maxis in Malaysia. We are actively engaged with other leading telecom operators in the region, who are particularly interested in our Email Mx e-mail platform and Richmail, as well as Web and media optimisation solutions.
About the announcement on the Browser-VAS Ecosystem that you have done with Sprint, are you replicating this for the region?
Yes, we expect this type of solution to be a key focus area for us within the region in 2011, and we have already engaged in discussions with several customers to date.
Globally, mobile developers are challenged today by fragmentation in the OS/application development environment. Even within the same operating system, there may be multiple versions as platforms continue to evolve. And the variety of hardware form factors and capabilities from smartphones to new entrants like tablets make it tough to ensure that apps will port from one to another. Until now, no ecosystem has been available to deploy enhanced services through the browser.
However, recently Openwaves Integra technology has been deployed by Sprint in the USA to develop a new ecosystem of enhanced services within the browser. This browser-VAS (value-added services) solution can provide developers the tools they need to develop apps and value-added services that run in the browser, allowing developers to monetise and market application content to consumers and enterprise customers. This solution delivers a revolutionary opportunity for developers to create apps that will execute in the browser and therefore will work across platforms and form factors.
This also allows the operator to promote their own services to their subscribers in a context-driven manner ensuring greater uptake while enabling personalisation. One example might be where the operator provides a metering app to allow the end-user to monitor their service plan, providing an immediate view of their data consumption and easy access to a service self-care portal for performing service top ups or upgrades.
